A Special Evening At The Vibrato

Review by Gloria Thornton of Ohana Promotions & William Jackson

On Tuesday, April 14th I had the pleasure of attending a star-studded musical event at the unique dining and entertainment experience in Bel Air, California, Vibrato Grill Jazz…etc.  No previous experience about which I could have been told, or about which I could have read, would have ever prepared me for my personal experience.   As a friend and I ascended the heavily secluded, private and picturesque Mulholland Drive, I sensed we were in for a surprising and most enchanting evening.

Just entering Vibrato catapulted us into another world.  Vibrato is one of the area’s most exciting new restaurants conceived by the great Herb Albert; it was obvious he spared no attention to detail.  It’s this attention which makes Vibrato the meeting place for the who’s who in entertainment.  We had the pleasure of being a part of engaging conversations with many celebrities who welcomed us because of the comfortable, laid back atmosphere; without all the fuss of the N. Robertson crowds.  Though in the entertainment business, we’re definitely glad to not be a part of crowd who relishes flash bulbs and those star struck fans who droll and faint at the sight of someone more popular.  It was nice to just be able to sit, relax and enjoy a generously poured beverage

The legendary Howard Hewett was featured as the musical guest.  In fact, this show was special as Mr. Hewett was featured as the first R&B artist on Vibrato outstanding musical menu, and what a Show!  Howard Hewett was in perfect musical form as musically he took us from his days with Shalamar to his rousing gospel flavored solo hit, Amen.  Hearing Howard Hewett sing is like hearing a perfectly tuned saxophone where the musician is in control of every key stroke and every breath.  Watching him perform is like watching a symphony orchestra where precision looks as if one is watching an amazing theatrical ballet.  Howard Hewett loves to sing and loves to be in front of an audience.  He speaks to each audience member in a one on one conversation through his music.  Outstanding!

I appreciate the fact Mr. Hewett gives back in so many ways.  In the audience were two outstanding independent music artists who are currently working with Mr. Hewett.  Additionally, I have the pleasure of working with Pittsburgh’s Own Vocalist, Antoinette with whom Mr. Hewett recorded the popular song, Where Do We Go From Here on her Hit CD, Verbal Crush.  The Vibrato is the perfect setting to feature Antoinette and Howard Hewett singing Where Do We Go From Here, as only they can!

The surprise guest of the evening was the incomparable, Mr. Stevie Wonder who made an onstage appearance after being guided down an elegant staircase.   We sat on the edge of our seats with anticipation which made it seem as if the descent took hours.  But, what a show stopper!  There is no “Wonder” why Stevie Wonder is considered a musical genius.

Though I would agree the voices of Howard Hewett and Stevie Wonder are legendary, but the state of the art acoustics in the Vibrato made these legends sound even better; near perfect. We eagerly await opportunities to see other vocal super stars try the Vibrato on for size.

Needless to say, the evening was memorable.  The Vibrato Experience is not for the faint of heart.   You have to want it.  It was impossible for me to sleep that night as I thought about all the new friends I had made and the musical history of which I am officially a part.

The climb up that every winding, steep hill was worth it!
